Keep Gutters Clean to Prevent Costly Repairs

It is that time of year again! Time to clean your gutters. Hint, in the Spokane / Newport, WA area this applies any time of the year! Leaves, needles, twigs, dirt and whatever else birds decide to drop onto your roof are all decaying in your gutters.  Aside from being super gross, gutter debris can cause all types of unplanned repairs. And no one wants to spend money on repairs! The gutter debris will eventually either clog your drainage, cause excess water or ice weight and back-flow into your walls (better hope the walls have been properly waterproofed) or collapse your gutters all together. Let’s avoid this and put your gutters on a 6-month cleaning schedule.

Assuming your gutters are safely reachable from a ladder, there are a few methods to employ. Good old hands with rubber gloves is one method. There are gutter scrapers or even a hose with a sprayer attachment (but be careful not to clog your down drains).  Laying a tarp down on the ground can help with cleanup.

Not comfortable on a ladder? Or just too lazy to get the ladder out? That’s okay…. They make a tool for that! Ground operated gutter cleaning tools with a wide array of functionalities are available. Wind, water or manual power all round out the list.

Don’t forget about your gutter down spouts. Ensure they are free of debris both in the down spout and at ground level.  Also ensure the water flow has a navigable route away from your house. The last thing you need is water seeping back toward your foundation.

Calling a professional is also a viable solution! If your gutters are exceptionally high, make sure to explain this to the professional over the phone to ensure they have the proper equipment. Remember, a backed-up gutter can fall or funnel water back into your roof line. Keep them clear!
